How to Program Stage Lights with DMX Controllers?

To build a show, programming a DMX Controller usually needs to address the lights, chain the lights, and create a scene.

1. Address the Lights: Set a unique DMX starting address on each light fixture (e.g., Light 1 = Address 1, Light 2 = Address 17, etc.).

2. Chain the Lights: Connect your DMX Controller to the first light, and then run a DMX cable from that light to the next, forming a "daisy chain" that connects all your fixtures.

3. Create a Scene: On your DMX controller, select the lights you want to use and tell them what to do (e.g., Color Red, Movement Left, Strobe Effect On). Save this look as a "Scene."

4. Build a Show: Arrange several Scenes into a "Chase" or "Sequence" to automatically run your full light show throughout the event.

FAQ

What are the common stage lights?

Stage lighting usually falls into a few core categories:

  • PAR lights for washes,
  • moving heads for dynamic beams,
  • LED bars for scenic color,
  • Fresnels and ellipsoidals for focused theater lighting,
  • strobes for impact,
  • laser lights for stunning visual effects.

How many lumens are stage lights?

A small theater stage (e.g., 300 square feet) needs about 15,000 lumens.
It’s enough to light actors, costumes, and scenery.

A medium-sized concert stage (e.g., 800 square feet) needs about 56,000 lumens. It's closer to a car’s high-beam headlights times 15–20, or 10–14 professional LED spots / moving heads running together.

What colors stand out on stage?

To make people stand out on a stage, warm colors (reds, oranges, ambers) should be major tones. They bring energy and passion. They pull the audience in, making large venues feel intimate.

To make a mysterious vibe, cool colors (blues, purples, greens) are ideal. They create depth, and make a small stage feel infinite.
