What Are Bulb Beam Moving Head Lights?

A bulb beam moving head light is a motorized fixture built around a discharge lamp (7R, 10R, 14R or 17R) that projects a narrow, intense shaft of light. They are the classic choice for aerial beam effects, long throws and punchy mid-air looks.
SHEHDS bulb beam moving heads handle the jobs DJs and lighting designers ask for most:
  • Aerial effects — the tight beam cuts through haze for visible shafts of light.
  • Long-throw punch — reach balconies, festival stages and back walls without losing intensity.
  • Pattern and color — color wheels, gobos, prisms and frost let one fixture create many looks.
Unlike LED beam moving head lights, bulb beams usually deliver a hotter, sharper beam and a replaceable lamp source. For color washes or wide coverage, add LED par lights or wash moving head lights.

FAQs

What does the R number mean in 7R, 10R, 14R and 17R beam lights?

The R number refers to the discharge lamp type used in the fixture. Each lamp type has a different wattage and output level: 7R = 230W lamp — the standard entry-level super beam. Sharp, bright, great for clubs and mobile DJ rigs. 10R = 275W lamp — more output and a slightly tighter beam angle than 7R. Popular for mid-size stages and touring. 14R = 311W lamp — high output with double prism capability. Suited for large stages and concerts. 17R = 350W lamp — top of the range. Ultra-bright, razor-sharp beams for the largest venues and outdoor stages. Higher R number = more wattage, more output, longer throw distance — and higher bulb replacement cost.

Do beam moving head lights need a fog or haze machine?

Not required, but highly recommended. Discharge beam moving head lights produce their most dramatic aerial effect when there is haze or fog in the air — the beam becomes fully visible as it cuts through the particles, creating the sharp "pencil beam" look seen at concerts and clubs. Without haze, beam lights still work well for gobo projection onto surfaces and stage wash effects, but the mid-air aerial beam effect is significantly reduced. A hazer (continuous thin haze) produces better results than a fog machine (heavy bursts) for beam light applications.

What is a 3-in-1 beam spot wash moving head light?

A 3-in-1 beam spot wash hybrid can switch between three different output modes: Beam mode — tight, narrow aerial beam for long-distance effects and mid-air visuals. Spot mode — medium-angle beam with gobos for pattern projection onto surfaces and performers. Wash mode — wide, soft-edged coverage for stage fill and background color. 3-in-1 hybrids give you more versatility from a single fixture — useful when you want to reduce the number of fixtures in a rig without sacrificing output variety. The trade-off is that dedicated beam-only fixtures typically produce sharper, more intense beams than a hybrid in beam mode.

How many beam moving head lights do I need for a concert stage?

For a club or mid-size venue, 4–6 discharge beam moving heads on trussing is a solid starting point — enough to create full aerial coverage across the room. For a concert or large stage, 8–12 beam movers is typical for a professional touring rig, often combined with wash lights for stage fill and LED beam lights for additional coverage zones. For a mobile DJ rig, 2–4 discharge beam movers give you the aerial impact without the weight and cost of a full concert rig. Pair them with LED beam lights or PAR lights for color fill.

Can discharge beam moving head lights be used alongside LED fixtures in the same rig?

Yes — mixing discharge beam lights with LED wash lights, LED PAR lights and LED beam lights in the same rig is standard practice for professional productions. A common configuration: discharge beam movers for high-impact aerial effects (their primary strength), LED wash moving heads for smooth backdrop and stage-fill color, and LED PAR lights for static uplighting positions. All fixture types support DMX512, so they run from the same controller with no compatibility issues.

How many bulb beam moving heads do I need for a mobile DJ rig?

Small DJ rig or wedding — 2–4 beam heads, often starting with the 230W 7R.Church stage — 2–4 beam heads for aerial effects, plus 4–6 LED par lights for wash.Medium club or festival stage — 4–8 beam heads mixed with wash moving heads and moving head spotlights.
